Title: Printed Electronics

Abstract: Printed electronics (PE) is a platform technology that is based on organic conducting and semiconducting as well as printable inorganic materials. By the combination of electronics manufacturing and text/graphic printing, one can manufacture high-quality electronic products that are thin, flexible, wearable, lightweight, of varying sizes, ultra-cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.
A wide range of printing methods have already been applied to conventional electronics fabrication. They include screen printing, inkjet printing, gravure printing, flexo printing, and offset printing. They are also applicable to many advanced PE products. Depending on the nature of the PE products, one must make a suitable choice of ink, substrate, designed device structure, pattern geometry, manufacturing speed, yield, quality, and production cost.
PE opens up new possibilities for applications and products, which can be categorized into the following groups: (1) Lighting (OLED), (2) Organic/inorganic photovoltaics, (3) Displays (front planes such as, for example, OLED, e-paper, and electrochromic and their active matrix back plane), (4) Integrated smart systems (RFID, sports fitness/healthcare devices, smart cards, sensors, and smart textiles), and (5) Electronics and components (memories, antennas, batteries, wiring and interconnects, and other components)
