Title: How gold was produced in the universe?
Speaker: Prof. Hideyuki Sakai (RIKEN, 성균관대학교)
Date & Time: May. 9. (Wed.) 2018 4:30 PM
Place: Natural Science 1, Room No. 31214
Abstract: Last summer, LIGO/Virgo collaboration detected gravitational
waves, named GW170817, associated with the merger of two
neutron stars. The merger has been speculated as the yet
unknown production site of heavy elements such as gold or
uranium in the Universe via the rapid neutron-capture process
(so-called r-process). Supernova explosion has also been
considered as a candidate site for the r-process.
In this colloquium, the r-process will be illustrated after
the introduction of basic physics of nucleosynthesis.
Some emphasis will be placed on experimental efforts to
identify the route of the r-process.
It will be also shown that the RISP accelerator project
on-going in Korea has an excellent potential to attack
this challenging research.
