Title: Introduction to exotic quantum states in solids

Abstract: Low-dimensional electron systems realized in ultrathin metal/semiconductor interfaces and layered two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted much attention in contemporary condensed-matter physics because they tend to exhibit an interesting variety of exotic quantum states, such as charge density waves (CDW), spin orderings, Mott physics, and superconductivity. These macroscopic quantum condensates are associated with the interactions of quasiparticles that involve the charge, the lattice, the orbital, and the spin degrees of freedom. In this talk, I will present our recent first-principles studies of low-dimensional electron systems such as indium wires on Si(111) , 2D transition-metal-dichalcogenide material TaS2 , and 2D kagome lattices Fe3Sn2 and FeSn . I also discuss a recent hot issue of room-temperature superconductivity that has been one of the most challenging subjects in modern physics. Recent experiments reported that lanthanum hydride LaH10 raises a superconducting transition temperature Tc up to ~260 (or 250) K at high pressures around 190 (170) GPa. Our first-principles calculations elucidate the microscopic mechanism of the observed high-Tc BCS-type superconductivity in LaH10, which can
be generic to another recently observed high-Tc hydride H3S .
