제목: Probing Stellar Explosions with Radioactive Beams*
연사: Michael Smith 박사님 (Oak Ridge National Lab.)
일시: 2013년 4월 17일(수) 오후4:30
장소: 제1과학관 31214 e+첨단강의실 초록: Some stars end their lifecycles in violent explosions which synthesize and disperse elements - including those that make life possible - into space. The temperatures and densities are so extreme in these events that thermonuclear reactions on unstable nuclei occur, drive the element creation and, in some cases, the energetics of the explosion. A frontier area of research involves creating beams of radioactive subatomic nuclei and utilizing them to measure, one-at-a-time, these reactions that are crucial to improving our understanding of exploding stars. This research requires very specialized accelerator laboratories and sophisticated radiation detectors, as well as computer simulations of stellar outbursts. At ORNL, our precision results with beams of radioactive fluorine isotopes have helped resolve important uncertainties in nova explosions, and we have made the first reaction measurements on neutron-rich nuclei important in heavy element creation in supernovae. This work demonstrated the viability of an important technique for nuclear astrophysics studies at next generation radioactive beam facilities. We have also pioneered online software systems that enable researchers to run and visualize simulations and share information with colleagues. The tremendous opportunities for exciting work in this field at a new generation of advanced facilities in the US, Korea, and elsewhere will be described.
