제목: Radio Detection of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos in Antarctica

초록:

While gratulating IceCube’s recent achievements of the first of observation of extragalactic Ultra High Energy (UHE) neutrinos (energies E > 1018 eV ) from extra-galaxy, physicists are still facing big challenges to improve its statistics. We would need more than an order of magnitude of target volume in order to identify origins of UHE neutrinos. A new promising approach is to use radio signals from showers induced by UHE neutrinos via the Askaryan effect. Taking a great advantage of a long attenuation length, the radio technique provides a power way to increase the target volume. As a frontier, the ANITA (ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna) experiment which is a balloon-borne neutrino telescope which consists of an array of broad-band horn antennas, successfully completed two flights over Antarctica during the 2006-2007 and 2008-2009 Austral summer seasons, and will be have another flight in 2014-2015 season. ANITA has showed additional detection capability of UHE cosmic rays too, suggesting the radio technique will be a strong method after Pier Auger Observatory.  Following experiments such as Askaryan Raio Array (ARA) and Antarctic Ross Ice-Shelf ANTenna Neutrino Array (ARIANNA) have been proposed for ground based antenna arrays in Antarctica. They have showed promising capabilities of neutrino detection over IceCube. In this talk, I will talk about the radio technique for UHE neutrinos and give a summary of existing experimental efforts in Antarctica. I also briefly introduce a Taiwanese local experiment, TAROGE which was recently funded.
