Abstract:
Metal oxides are abundant in nature and exhibit high chemical and thermal stabilities. Furthermore, the metal elements are able to form a large diversity of oxides. These can adopt a vast number of structural geometries with an electronic structure that can exhibit metallic, semiconductor or insulator characters. In particular, ‘mixed metal oxides’ such as solid solutions and composites can be useful in a wide range of technology areas because of their greater flexibility on properties and multi-functionalities (i.e., more freedom to tune or enhance functionalities that cannot be obtained from individual constituents). In this talk, I will introduce mixed metal oxide (solid solution and self-assembled heteroepitaxial nanocomposite) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition for investigating photocatalytic activities and resistive switching properties of the materials. ‘BiFeO3 and SrTiO3’ without phase separation and ‘ZnFe2O4 and SrTiO3’ with phase separation were chosen as model oxide combinations and their photoelectrochemical water splitting activities were investigated. In addition, electroforming-free resistive switching was achieved by using ‘Sm-doped CeO2 and SrTiO3’ nanocomposites. The resistive switching behaviors were controlled by Sm-dopant concentrations. Resistive switching and growth mechanisms of the Sm-doped CeO2 and SrTiO3 nanocomposites will be discussed.
