 5. Abstract: Two-dimensional materials have been extensively studied since the first monolayer graphene was separated in 2004. Exciting (and unexpected) new physics as well as an extensive array of applications have been reported. Optical spectroscopy, along with (magneto-)transport measurements, has been among the most important tools to study and characterize these materials. In this colloquium, I will review some of the most important optical spectroscopy results in this field and highlight some recent work from my group including the studies of 2D magnetic van der Waals materials and twisted heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides.
