초록: About one fifth of known elements are manmade. Journey of manmade elements started during
the second world war and it was the device of a manmade element which was used to clinch the
victory for the allies. In Berkeley, California, a young chemist named Glenn Seaborg synthesized and
isolated a new element, Plutonium ,which was instrumental to bring an end to the World War II. Glenn
Seaborg went on to discover ten new elements, more than any scientist in history, and synthesized
hundreds of radioactive isotopes, with applications in everything from the treatment of cancer, to the
common household smoke detector and a major power source for mankind on earth as well as for
space / ocean exploration.
IUPAC in it’s meeting in China in July, 2009 has accepted Copernicium as the nomenclature for the
element 112 which corresponds to the last member of the 6d transition series. “Atom at a time
Chemistry” techniques and alpha-alpha correlations with the known daughters have helped in the
identification of the new elements , some of which have the half lives of the order of milliseconds.
Quest for the synthesis of new elements has reached the inert gas configuration Z=118 and is likely to
continue to unravel the fascinating world of nucleus.
