Title: Rare-earth: versatility and capability

Abstract: The group of rare-earth elements comprises the 17 chemically similar elements
crucial to the manufacture of many hi-tech products and alternative energy
systems. Several of its members can be used as starting materials for magnets,
catalysts, electronics, and fuel cells. Due to the chemical similarity, if one
member of the group forms a compound of a given composition and crystal
structure all other members will act in the same way. In contrast to the chemical
properties, the physical properties may vary significantly within such a series of
isostructural compounds. Due to the filling up of the 4f electron shell spin and
orbital moment will show a large variation as one proceeds from the Ce
compound to the corresponding Yb compounds. This offers the possibility of
studying various magnetic behavior of materials in which spin and orbital moment
occur as parameters under a wide variety of different conditions. In this talk, I will
present versatile, magnetic properties associated with the 4f electrons in rareearth-
based intermetallic compounds and explain how to tune the system by
varying rare-earth elements.
