Title: Gravitating Spinning Stars (a particle theorist's perspective)


Abstract:  The detection of gravitational waves calls for high precision computation in general relativity, both  numerically and analytically. Traditionally, the analytic computation has been based on the post-Newtonian expansion, building upon Einstein's correction to the Newtonian potential. Many new (mutually complementary) methods have been developed over the years. One of them is the "effective field theory" approach, which originated from particle physics and propagated into gravitational physics in the 1990's. More recently, an avalanche of progress in the scattering amplitudes in particle physics led to a renewed interest in possible collaborations between the two communities. In this informal talk, we hope to introduce the audience to some of the main techniques and results in this fruitful interdisciplinary area. Toward the end, we will briefly explain our on-going attempts to compute the spin-dependent terms using some of the new methods.
