5. Abstract: Photon-based spectroscopic techniques have long been developed and served as a powerful tool in understanding electric and magnetic properties of condensed matters. Linear or nonlinear optical responses enable us to reveal static and dynamic properties related to fundamental degrees of freedom in solids, such as charge, spin, and lattice, which can have a direct or indirect coupling to the electromagnetic waves. In this presentation, I will discuss how nonlinear optical spectroscopy, in particular, the optical second harmonic generation technique is exploited to investigate not only the crystal structural symmetry but also electric and magnetic properties of condensed matters. The topics include (i) polar metal phase of oxide thin films, (ii) atomically thin multiferroic van der Waals materials, and (iii) hot carrier diffusion in semiconductors.
