Title: Physics in Medicine: Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has revolutionized modern medical imaging, and was made possible by the discovery of nuclear induction in the 1940s combined with an ingenious image encoding ideas and the advancement of superconducting magnet technologies. Today more than 100 million MRI scans are being performed per year globally, and the role of MRI in medicine and physiology will only grow over time. In SKKU Suwon campus we have a major neuroscience research center (IBS-CNIR) where 4 cutting-edge, high-field (3T, 7T, 9.4T, 15.2T) MRI scanners provide ample research opportunities for studying the physics of MRI, applying physics for improving MRI, and study bio-electromagnetism by MRI. In this talk, I will (1) overview the history and principles of human MRI, (2) explain recent applications of MRI for brain studies, and (3) outline the current research activities in the MRI laboratory in SKKU.
